The United Methodist Church may trace its origins to John and Charles Wesley's revival movement in England and the Great Awakening in the United States. As a result, the church has a distinct Wesleyan doctrinal orientation, which emphasizes liturgical liturgy, holiness, and evangelicalism.

The United Methodist Church adheres to a connectional polity, which many Methodist groups share. It's broken down into conferences. At the highest level, the General Conference is the only body that may officially speak for the United Methodist Church.

The United Methodist Church is the biggest mainline Protestant denomination in the United States, the second-largest Protestant church, and the third-largest Christian denomination in the country. As of 2014, United Methodist Church had over 7 million worshippers in the United States.
